Minimum Passing Score

Firefighter recruits are required to maintain an 80% overall average test score at the conclusion of the recruit academy.  The overall average test score is based on the ten module tests and final test as indicated below.  Recruits must complete the academy with this minimum score in order to receive a certificate of completion at graduation.

Modular and Final Tests

Firefighter recruits are required to complete a total of 10 module tests, an EVIP final test, a HazMat final test, and a Firefighter I final review test.  The module tests are based on chapters from the Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills textbook.  The final test is the Washington State Patrol IFSAC Firefighter I review test.  Successful completion of the recruit academy is based upon the module tests and Firefighter I final review test only.  The EVIP, HazMat, and FFI Certification tests are all separate assessments which do not factor into the final module test average necessary for academy graduation.

Modular Test Scores

Firefighter recruits have two opportunities to take each module test.  The highest test score generated from the test module series is the score that will apply to the student’s overall class average test score.  In addition to the 80% overall average test score requirement, recruits may not fail any more than three test modules total.  Recruits who fail three test modules will be dropped from the recruit academy and asked to enroll in another academy at a later time.  Recruits who have an overall average test score that drops below the 80% requirement during the academy will be notified immediately and provided academic counseling with an implemented study improvement plan.  The following is an example of a final student test score.

Module 1          64%   82%

Module 2          76%   92%

Module 3          86%

Module 4          54%   98%

Module 5          78%   88%

Module 6          72%   78%

Module 7          80%

Module 8          92%

Module 9          72%   74%

Module 10        76%   96%

Final Review      84%

Module Test Average – 86.6%

Recruit Academy Average – 86.4%

The module test average is the average of all highest scores for each module series.  The recruit academy average includes the WSP IFSAC final review test result.  This is the recruit academy average necessary for successful completion of the program.

WSP IFSAC Firefighter I Written and Practical Tests

Firefighter recruits will have the opportunity to take both the written and practical tests for Washington State Patrol IFSAC Firefighter I.  This certificate is the standard in Washington State for entry level structural firefighters.  The written test will be made available to all firefighter recruits at the end of the academy.  The practical test will be made available to the top twelve high scoring firefighter recruits based on the final module test score average at the end of the academy.
