Departments may substitute a member prior to the convening of the first class.

C.  OPEN ENROLLMENT

Except for Skills Weekends, academy classes are open to non-recruit personnel on a space available basis. A nominal fee will be charged to defray the cost of equipment and/or instructional materials for classes such as First Aid, HAZMAT, and EVIP.  Attendance by non-recruit personnel in academy classes will be coordinated through the Academy Coordinator.

D.  EVIP (Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention)

EVIP will be offered if there are enough students registered.  Please indicate on the registration if your students will be attending EVIP.

E.  Medical, Respiratory, Sensorial, Mental, and Motor Skill Standards

Agencies are responsible for verifying that their prospective recruit(s) meet applicable medical fitness and respiratory test standards, in addition to evaluating their sensorial, mental, and motor skill aptitude to successfully and safely complete the course of study. The Fire Chief’s or their designee’s signature on the registration will serve as verification that their recruit(s) meet(s) these standards.

F.  Medical Insurance

Recruits are required to be covered by their respective agency’s medical insurance.  Career FFs should be covered by their agency’s insurance and Volunteer FFs should be covered by WA State Board of Volunteer FFs and Reserve Officers.

G.  PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) AND CLOTHING

PPE and equipment used by the recruits during the Academy must meet current NFPA safety standards and be safe to use. This includes a current hydro date for SCBA cylinders.  The Fire Chief’s or their designee’s signature on the registration will serve as verification that the PPE of their recruit(s) meet(s) these standards.

Each recruit needs:

1.      Safe and properly fitting turnout gear. Recruits who do not have appropriate turnout gear will not be permitted to participate in skills weekends or live fire training.

2.      A SCBA and spare SCBA cylinder, at least 2 passport system nametags, and access to a hose strap for the skills weekends.

H.  Apparatus and Equipment

All equipment and apparatus provided by a participating fire department must comply with the most recent NFPA standards. The Fire Chief’s or their designee’s signature on this registration will serve as verification that the equipment and apparatus they provide for use in the Recruit Academy meet these standards.

Agencies with four (4) or more recruits should plan on committing an Engineer and an apparatus for every                 four (4) recruits enrolled to serve as instructor/pump operator for Skills Weekends. Agencies with

fewer than four recruits may be requested to provide an apparatus if one is available. Agencies that may

not have an apparatus available should communicate directly with the Academy Coordinator, Jacob Yake, at 360-507-3941.

Each agency-provided engineer or classroom instructor must meet the requirements established by

the Training Consortium and should attend an instructor workshop if scheduled by the academy

coordinator.  Scheduling of an instructor workshop will be at the discretion of the coordinator.
