Nature of Work
This is a part time position for an experienced fire officer who understands the nature and character of delivering emergency services training and is interested and dedicated to coordinating the training and development of prospective firefighter candidates for the fire service.  The coordinator shall perform administrative and logistics functions pertaining to the daily operation of the Thurston Fire and Rescue Training Constortium Recruit Academy, shall coordinate and oversee the delivery of all instructional and training aspects of the academy, shall be responsible for the management of academy assets, and shall evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum and instructors in meeting the training needs and requirements.
 
Qualifications
  • An experienced career or volunteer fire officer in the rank of Lieutenant or higher in good  

           standing, preferably with five years experience.

 

  • Must have completed IFSAC Fire Service Instructor I course (or equivalency) and preferably

           IFSAC Fire Service Instructor II with considerable experience as a trainer and instructor.

 

  • Must have excellent interpersonal, managerial, and leadership skills.

 

  • Must have completed Incident Command Systems 100, 200, and 300 levels.

 

  • Have experience in needs and program assessment and planning, project and program 

           management, and financial planning and management. 

 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • A temporary part-time coordinator who reports to the Training Division Chair and the

           Executive Director of the Thurston Fire and Rescue Training Consortium.

 

  • Coordinates and supervises the cadre of academy instructors.  Assures instructors are

           notified of the date, time, and location of courses they are to teach.

 

  • Ensures equipment, class supplies, and refreshments are available and in working condition for

           class instructors and students.

 

  • Assures proper and adequate apparatus, equipment, and accommodations are provided for

           the Skills Weekends.

 

  • Participates in the instructor workshop and academy debriefings.  Evaluates successes,

           deficiencies, and conducts a needs assessment after each academy.

 

  • Attends and participates in Thurston County Training Division meetings and other relevant

           meetings called by the Training Division Chair to the greatest extent possible.

 

  • Ensures sound logistics management practices are implemented with regard to purchasing of

           equipment and supplies and their accountability.

 

  • Revises and distributes academy application packets as necessary.

 

  • Processes applications and creates a class roster for distribution to the Executive Director.

 

  • Divides the academy into the appropriate number of manageable engine companies.

 

  • Revises, prints, copies, accounts for, and binds rosters, lesson plans, evaluation forms,

           instructor reimbursement forms, skills session master check sheet books, student task books  

           and workbooks, and skills session schedules and distributes to instructors and fire

           departments.

 

  • Completes instructor and student t-shirt orders.

 

  • Collects class rosters and instructor evaluations, copies class rosters, and distributes to each

           district.  Notifies each fire district of their respective recruit attendance in classes and

           at Skills Weekends.

 

  • Schedules and sets up the Fireblast trailer in conjunction with the Executive Director.

 

  • Logs class rosters into computer spreadsheet and submits completed spreadsheet to the

           Executive Director upon the conclusion of each academy.

 

  • Collects all instructor reimbursement forms and submits them to the financial office via the

           Executive Director for payment.

 

  • Orders all necessary books and publications for
    the academy in conjunction with the 

           Executive Director, including EVAP and HazMat materials.

 

  • Reviews student task books and workbooks for completion.  Distributes task books and

           workbooks to the proper department.

 

  • Creates, registers, documents, and distributes certificates.

 

  • Coordinates the joint graduation ceremony in conjunction with the Executive Director.

 

  • Accountable for, inventories, and replaces all equipment and materials associated with the

           academy.

 

  • Arranges and coordinates all Skills Weekends associated with the academy.

 

  • Completes other various duties assigned by the Training Officer Division and/or the Executive

           Director.   

 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of recruit school operations, procedures, and program management.

 

  • Knowledge and proven ability to lead and manage a cadre of instructors and volunteer

           assistants.

 

  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to follow through on tasks in a timely manner.

 

  • Skills to organize tasks, people, and events. 
 
Eligibility Requirements
  • Must be an active member with a Thurston County fire district or department

 

  • Must have written permission from the Fire Chief of their district or department.

 

  • Must be a volunteer or career fire officer in the rank of Lieutenant or above in good standing

           with a minimum of five years experience. 

 
Working Environment
  • The coordinator will be engaged in managerial and administrative functions as well as field

           and fire ground environments.  The physical demands described herein are representative of

           those that must be met by this position to successfully perform the essential functions of the

           job.

 

  • The coordinator will perform all physical demands required for that of a clerical worker.  The

           coordinator will also perform all physical demands required of a typical firefighter operating

           on the fire ground.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth

           perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

  • The coordinator will be required to attend various meetings, conferences, and workshops

           throughout Thurston County and possibly throughout the state.  A valid Washington State

           drivers license is required.
